AMERICAN EXPRESS COMPANY CONTRIBUTES $1 MILLION TO RELIEF EFFORTS IN ASIA

NEW YORK, December 30, 2004 -- American Express Company today announced that it will donate $1 million to provide relief to the Asian countries devastated by the recent earthquake and resulting tsunamis. The funds will support the relief efforts of Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations in the affected countries.

Additionally, the American Express Foundation will match employee donations for relief efforts.

American Express customer service centers in all countries in the region are operating, and service representatives around the world are assisting cardmembers, clients and merchants with travel and emergency needs.
